Old Testament and New Testament
Old Testament
In Christianity, the Old Testament or Old Covenant is the collection of texts from the Hebrew Bible, Hebrew texts predating the life of Jesus, as recounted in the New Testament (in Greek: Ἡ Παλαιὰ Διαθήκη / Hê Palaià Diathếkê).
The Old Testament contains Jewish religious writings. For Christians, the Bible consists of the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament includes the following parts: the Pentateuch, historical books, Writings, and Prophets.
The word "testament" comes from the Greek word διαθήκη / diathếkê: testament, contract, covenant) translated into Latin as testamentum (testament; testimony). The Greek word has a broader meaning than the Latin word: that of a contract or "covenant."
It is difficult to determine when the Old Testament was compiled as a Canon by Christians. In the 2nd century, the Church of Rome decided to reject Marcion's heresy, who attempted to eliminate all references to Old Testament writings. It was only later that the Canon of the Christian Bible was established.
New Testament
The New Testament (in Greek: Ἡ Καινὴ Διαθήκη / Hê Kainề Diathếkê) is a collection of writings related to the life of Jesus and teachings of his earliest disciples recognized as "canonical" by Christian authorities after a process spanning several centuries.
The word "testament" comes from the Greek word διαθήκη (diathếkê: "testament, contract, covenant") translated into Latin as testamentum (testament, testimony). The Greek word has a broader meaning (that of a contract) than the Latin word. Hence, some prefer translating it as Alliance.
Christians believe that the Bible comprises the Old Testament (writings predating Jesus) and the New Testament.
List of books included in the New Testament
The New Testament includes, according to the Western canon order:
- the four canonical Gospels (Gospels according to Matthew, Mark, Luke, John);
- the Acts of the Apostles;
- 14 epistles, most attributed to Paul of Tarsus;
- other Catholic epistles attributed to other disciples Simon Peter, James the Just, John son of Zebedee, Jude;
- the Apocalypse according to John son of Zebedee.
The canon closes at 27 books by Church authority. As a result, it concludes earlier than in the East at regional Councils of Carthage in 397 and 419. Until the late 4th century, it excludes the Epistle to the Hebrews. This matter was never addressed in ecumenical councils at the end of that century. This omission thus assigns these councils to serve as a court and venue to address Church matters in a unification project. Despite Gelasius's decrees, apocalyptic literature other than John's will be copied and regarded as part of the New Testament until the middle ages (13th century).
